Wallpaper launched in the nineties in London and caught a lot of publishers napping. The editor, Tyler Brulé, reputedly showed the dummy magazine to nearly every disinterested magazine publisher in London, before going ahead and financing it himself. The magazine went on to define a new consumer with impeccable taste, global attitude and boundless ambition. Advertisers signed up in droves and other publishers scrabbled to dream up imitators.
I worked for Wallpaper in fact after it was subsequently sold on to IPC and for a time was in the same building as TIME, my previous employer. A very lovely magazine to work on, where the design of the magazine was taken as seriously as it should be for today’s visually-aware market. Tyler of course went on to launch another successful magazine, Monocle.
